About the Author Danuta (Diane) Bukatko (Ph.D., University of Massachusetts, Amherst) is Professor of Psychology and currently holds the Joseph H. Maguire Professorship in Education at Holy Cross College. She has a long-standing interest in cognitive and gender-role development in children, as well as the teaching of psychology. Her current research focuses on children's understanding of gender and power.Marvin W. Daehler is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He is a Fellow in Division 7 (Developmental Psychology) of the American Psychological Association as well as a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science. He has been Associate Editor for the journal CHILD DEVELOPMENT and the MONOGRAPHS OF THE SOCIETY FOR RESEARCH IN CHILD DEVELOPMENT, a reviewer for research articles submitted to numerous other developmental publications, and has served on grant review panels for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Department of Education. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease about six months ago. My doctor recommended this book, and it has been life changing. I am young and healthy, so this diagnosis really rocked my world. Dr. Blum's book helped me realize that there is so much I can do to be in charge of my health rather than just taking medication. I'm not opposed to medicine, but why not make some lifestyle changes to limit my medicinal needs? I have changed my diet based on the recommendations in the book, and I have SO MUCH MORE ENERGY than I had 6 months ago. Additionally, based on Dr. Blum's recommendations in the book, I was tested for Celiac Disease. I was surprised to find that I have antibodies that show a gluten intolerance. I am not one to jump on fad diets, so going gluten-free never crossed my mind. However, now that I know that my body is being harmed by gluten, I will be gluten-free for the rest of my life. It's been a bit harder implementing the stress reduction strategies recommended in the book, but I'll be working on that for the rest of my life. I am not exaggerating when I say that this book has been life-changing and empowering. I still struggle with my recent diagnoses, but I know that I can control some aspects of how quickly they progress. Great purchase!I hope this review has been helpful for you! First, the positive. This book has a lot of information, it is very informative. It sounds like she really knows what she is talking about and the program, although very diet restrictive and long looks pretty good at restoring health.The one problem I have that I did not see in others reviews is it is very expensive. Once you get to the part with the plans details...there is a 30 day gut cleanse plan and then a 21 day liver detox plan...you see all the supplements you need to purchase (sold in kits on her website) and man is it expensive. As of now. The gut cleanse is $295 and the liver is $175. You then can purchase the relax kit for the relaxation portion and purchase the recipe books as well. Both my husband and I have an auto immune of reactive arthritis, spondyloarthritis and this would cost us about $1,000 for for the two of us to have 51 days of supplements. That's some very expensive supplements!!! I am sure they are good and if it would completely cure us that would be great. Unfortunately, we are low income and can not afford it so that's that. I just wanted to let everyone know before they purchase the book. I may just do a juice cleanse like Joe cross ( I think that was his name) in fat sick and nearly dead (documentary) as that seemed to cure his auto immune and I can afford that.

There is some very solid advice in this book and good discussions of how the immune system works that will probably interest people who suffer from any autoimmune condition. I really like the author's approach to the "whole patient," especially her understanding that stress and sleep are vital factors in determining overall health. She gives practical suggestions that are easy to implement. She does an excellent job of helping the reader figure out where to focus their energies, providing in-depth assessments for various areas such as lifestyle, diet, and toxin exposure. None of them helped me in my particular case, since my disease began so long ago there is nothing currently triggering it, but I think someone newly diagnosed would find her approach to be a godsend. She writes as if she is in the exam room with you, patiently holding your hand. I also liked her approach to diet in general, and I managed to lose a few pounds and have more stable energy by following her advice, even though it did nothing for my immune issues.However, there are some caveats. I found this book recommended in IG Living as important reading for people with any kind of immune system dysfunction. I had really high hopes since the book starts out by seeming very moderate and science-based, and the author has training in both allopathic medicine and public health. Unfortunately, midway through the book I realized that it contains the same old litany of health-related fads that one finds circulating across the internet in abundance wherever there are desperately sick individuals: in online forums, mailing lists, and social media groups. The recommendations won't surprise anyone: go gluten, sugar, and dairy free; eat organic, whole foods; take lots of vitamins and supplements, and examine your environment for "toxins." Worse, the book is tied to the author's own business of selling custom supplement packages. I have a distrust of anyone who peddles such things, as I believe any doctor worth their salt should not be promising results without clinical trials. The book follows a trend I find troubling where holistic practitioners are recommending off-label uses of various tests and therapies and treating with subclinical results. Common suggestions are extensive food allergy testing, heavy metal chelation without evidence of toxicity, and treatment of thyroid disease even when TSH levels do not suggest autoimmunity.Bottom line, if you are into holistic or functional medicine, this book is probably your bag, but as with any serious illness, don't disregard the advice of your care team of medical specialists. Don't read this book thinking that you're going to find the "miracle cure" for your disease. It will probably help you manage things and feel better, but there are no guarantees.

I was diagnosed with RA 5 years ago at the age of 25, I attempted several medications for a relief of symptoms. The medications caused side effects and gave me no real relief from RA symptoms at all. I found a holistic dr who told me about this book. I follow this book strictly and with the diet requirements and the supplements suggested. This book has been a life saver, I have my life back! I do still have days of flares but nothing like what I was going through. I am on no medication and control this disease with diet and supplements alone. Anyone battling or know someone battling an autoimmune disease needs this book!!
