(Disclosure- I read this book as a relative newbie to the subject of electronics and tube amplifiers but with advanced degrees in mathematics)This seemed to me to be a good book considering the paucity of literature on tube amplifiers but it suffers from editorial errors here and there (if you spend the time to check all the formulas) and poor graphs and diagrams.But more importantly it suffers from a lack of thoroughness in supporting all the results. Too many times Mr. Popovich simply states the result saying that that it is too complicated to derive it. This is not very useful. Why read the book if you have to derive it all yourself anyhow?The math involved here is not all that daunting. High school level at best. If you are even bothering to approach this subject, one would have to assume you have at least a college level of engineering mathematics which is way beyond anything required here.You can expect to spend considerable time filling in the blanks of things stated but not proven.It would also be better if he were more complete in the analysis of each circuit discussed including a calculation of gains, input and output impedances and Miller effect.The whole first part on basic electronic circuit theory could also be eliminated as there are lots of better texts on this and you will never learn it if this is the first source you are relying on.Despite the flaws, it is a very good book and well worth the struggle for the newbie to fill in the blank though you will, no doubt, need several other texts to supplement it.A definite recommend and the DVDs you can purchase to supplement this material are excellent!

I have bought both volume 1 & 2 and am about half way through the first volume. It is a very thorough book without going over the top. Everything follows a logical progression from basic electronic theory to components to general audio amplifiers to fundamentals of vacuum tube operation & so on. It does assume a basic understanding of electronics & high school mathematics, but that's enough to work through & build up your knowledge. Richly illustrated, with lots of real life tube circuitry & explanations on how they work. Not a book for absolute beginners, but not too overly technical to totally discourage you either! He completely covers his subject over the 2 volumes & I would recommend these to anyone who is serious in learning how these wonderful amplifies work!

This book is ok, could have been great, but this is more of a piece-meal book. Pieces of this and parts of that, only to hook you into having to buy volume 2 or 3. I have not purchased the other two books, so I don't know what is in them. It appears from the table of contents, the missing pieces from this book are in the next one. Maybe it contains more piece meal parts and designs that leave you having to buy the next volume and the next volume just to get some practicality of the designs out of it. Where is the power supply information, ohh the next volume. Where is the output transformer selection information, ohh the next volume. If you say this power supply can be used for all driver and phono amplifier stages, then the voltage of the designs should match the power supply that you say to use. If not, you should talk about how to adjust it to suit the applications. If you are going to charge 70 bucks for something, at least give enough information to complete something. He makes the argument about how people aren't honest about their equipment, but isn't honest and forthcoming enough to say that you will not be able to complete any of these projects until you read volume 2. Maybe something like "I conveniently left off the information that I am going to teach you in volume 2 from the designs." Wink Wink $ $ Wink Wink. I now see why he says in the preface that he made 10 times more money in his first year of making how to videos and books than he did his whole career making audio equipment.

This book is superb! It is overall, the best book I have encountered on tube audio. I have to acknowledge that I am not sure if this is the best introductory volume on the subject, but with a basic familiarity it will take you very far in your understanding of the subject. It is jammed packed with illustrations and diagrams that have taken me so much further than I expected. I can’t wait to read the other two volumes.

One of the best books on Vacuum tubes I own. I purchased this book and then immediately purchased volume 2 by the same author

Good book. Doing my certification in 2 weeks. Using only this . Wish me luck.Update:I'm certified phlebotomist. :)

I needed this book for a phlebotomy course and we found several errors- pretty big ones too. The biggest one that comes to mind is that book said that UA tests/ tubes go to the Hematology Department, which is just incorrect. There were other errors as well, such as tube labeling and tests run on different tubes.

I needed this for my phlebotomy class and it had all the information I needed and more. The setup was nice and the questions at the end of the chapter were very helpful. I passed my ASCP boards with double what I needed!

I initially bought this for my friend who is pursuing her license/certification as a Phlebotomist and she is doing very well in her classes. She says that the book is in good condition and that there are no missing pages which is comforting to know since it was sent to her house and not mine.She says that the information is up to date and that she is doing well. Unsure if that's cause of her studying capabilities AND this book. Or if it's just this book.

This book was very helpful while i was going to school. Used it to study for my exam as well which I passed with flying colors.

Honestly I was skeptical on puchasing this book due previous reviews but I bought a new not used book. It is great book and will help you succeed in your class. It really does have more info than what you will need, it has an access code for online help and it comes a quick study card for order of draw.

The book gives good information but if you’re studying for the ASCP exam idk you’re probably better off getting their study material. I know it’s pricey but the questions they ask on the exam are like nothing from this book. I still passed but I didn’t feel confident once I started the actual exam.

As usual, Nouwen uses his gifts of taking an everyday activity (in this case fundraising) and unveiling the spiritual foundation supporting it. I am new to fundraising and now find myself in charge of raising a lot of money. This book is filled with easy to understand and apply nuggets of wisdom that will make my job much easier! In short the book suggests fundraising is not asking someone to give; its sharing with others a great opportunity to invest and in so doing reap the benefits that accompany a wonderful investment. There's a reason Jesus said its better to give than receive. This book explains why and I highly recommend it.

Henri Nouwen's A SPIRITUALITY OF FUNDRAISING is a book I need to read again every year in order to keep my bearings.My own battle with fundraising has seen some success and some notable failure. I was raised to believe that a decent person never asked anyone for money. Nouwen's little book turns that idea upside down.Or, better said, rightside up.For Nouwen, asking people to become generous and even sacrificial stewards is offering those people the gift of conversion. He means this in the deepest, process-oriented, open sense of the word. Seen this way, it is a service rendered. Ministry extended. I need this.Nouwen starts strong:'Fundraising is proclaiming what we believe in such a way that we offer other people an opportunity to participate with us in our vision and mission. Fundraising is precisely the opposite of begging. When we seek to raise funds we are not saying, "Please, could you help us out because lately it's been hard." We are inviting you to invest yourself through the resources that God has given you—your energy, your prayers, and your money—in this work to which God has called us." Most of us hate to ask for money, but this book puts that fear into perspective. The bottom line is, we need to think of fundraising as an opportunity and if you don't let people know about some good work you are doing, you are robbing them of an opportunity to do something good. It's a very short read, so it's easy to get through and it will change how you look at fundraising.

One big take away from this transcript: Fundraising at it's best is a chance for fresh conversion to God's ways... it is a walk of humility on the side of the "Asker" AND in the "Giver". Both are accountable about their stewardship to God who owns all things and allows us to manage them. Inspiring!

Having raised support for various mission efforts that my wife and I have enjoyed over the past 27 years, I found this book very helpful. It is so easy to become cynical and focused on the negative of fundraising. Discouragement can be a constant companion, if one is not focused on the spirituality of fundraising. I recommend this book to be read and read again many times, especially before a meeting to ask for funding.

Sally Lipsky has a B.S. elementary education from the University of New Mexico, M.Ed. reading education from Texas Southern University, and Ph.D. language communications and adult education from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a full professor in the Developmental Studies Department, College of Education, Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
