All along he gropes for an answer to the question: what power does the Himalaya possess that has drawn generations of seekers to it? If anything distinguishes Aitken from the regular travel writer, it is his inspired craziness. With his wide-ranging, sometimes eccentric, interests, this book is replete with literature, geology, philosophy, and folklore. There are detours into hill gossip, stories of local ghosts, accounts of local customs, and exasperated asides about political ineptitude. About the Author

Henri Nouwen was an internationally renowned priest and author, respected professor, and beloved pastor who wrote over 40 books on the spiritual life. As usual, Nouwen uses his gifts of taking an everyday activity (in this case fundraising) and unveiling the spiritual foundation supporting it. I am new to fundraising and now find myself in charge of raising a lot of money. This book is filled with easy to understand and apply nuggets of wisdom that will make my job much easier! In short the book suggests fundraising is not asking someone to give; its sharing with others a great opportunity to invest and in so doing reap the benefits that accompany a wonderful investment. There's a reason Jesus said its better to give than receive. This book explains why and I highly recommend it.

Henri Nouwen's A SPIRITUALITY OF FUNDRAISING is a book I need to read again every year in order to keep my bearings.My own battle with fundraising has seen some success and some notable failure. I was raised to believe that a decent person never asked anyone for money. Nouwen's little book turns that idea upside down.Or, better said, rightside up.For Nouwen, asking people to become generous and even sacrificial stewards is offering those people the gift of conversion. He means this in the deepest, process-oriented, open sense of the word. Seen this way, it is a service rendered. Ministry extended. We are inviting you to invest yourself through the resources that God has given you—your energy, your prayers, and your money—in this work to which God has called us." It's the best book about fundraising. have bought it for a number for friends who are either in fundraising or who are raising funds for missions trips. Most of us hate to ask for money, but this book puts that fear into perspective. The bottom line is, we need to think of fundraising as an opportunity and if you don't let people know about some good work you are doing, you are robbing them of an opportunity to do something good. It's a very short read, so it's easy to get through and it will change how you look at fundraising.

This classic booklet, A Spirituality of Fundraising, is just 64 pages and is an excellent companion piece to John Frank's 55-page booklet, Stewardship As A Lifestyle: Seeking to live as a Steward and Disciple.Pastors and ministry leaders can share these two booklets with their board members, staff and key volunteers--with confidence--because they are both short enough that people will actually read them!Henri Nouwen gave a talk on the spirituality of fundraising that became a published booklet after his death. He writes, "Fundraising is as spiritual as giving a sermon, entering a time of prayer, visiting the sick, or feeding the hungry." Then he adds, "Fundraising is always a call to conversion."Few understood people of wealth like Nouwen did. "Sometimes our concern for the poor," he writes, "may carry with it a prejudice against the rich." His chapter, "People Who Are Rich," is worth the price of this powerful little booklet.

Noted for his writing on spirituality, Henri Nouwen might not be an author one would think to turn to for advice on fundraising, but his perspective is one much needed. Nouwen talks movingly about how raising money can and should convert both the giver and the receiver and lead to more meaningful relationships with God and one another. His approach to what could be seen as a purely secular endeavor is sorely needed in churches and other non-profit organizations.

Though this classic on fundraising has been around a while, I just discovered it. I have long enjoyed Henri Nouwen's devotional writings, this one stands out as a gem. One big take away from this transcript: Fundraising at it's best is a chance for fresh conversion to God's ways... it is a walk of humility on the side of the "Asker" AND in the "Giver". Both are accountable about their stewardship to God who owns all things and allows us to manage them. Inspiring!

Read this book and you will never look at giving, asking, receiving nor ministry the same. As only Nouwen can do, he positions the reader to clearly seeing divine blessing in fundraising as fundamental to kingdom building.This book is for all who are related in any way with a non-profit.

Having raised support for various mission efforts that my wife and I have enjoyed over the past 27 years, I found this book very helpful. It is so easy to become cynical and focused on the negative of fundraising. Discouragement can be a constant companion, if one is not focused on the spirituality of fundraising. I recommend this book to be read and read again many times, especially before a meeting to ask for funding.

About the Author

Sally Lipsky has a B.S. elementary education from the University of New Mexico, M.Ed. reading education from Texas Southern University, and Ph.D. language communications and adult education from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a full professor in the Developmental Studies Department, College of Education, Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Her work has centered on aspects of student learning at the post-secondary level, including college reading and study strategies and peer-to-peer learning.
