About the Author

Maya Chinchilla is a Guatemalan, Bay Area-based writer, video artist, and educator with an MFA in English and Creative Writing from Mills College. She writes and performs poetry that explores themes of historical memory, heartbreak, tenderness, sexuality, and alternative futures. Her work —sassy, witty, performative, and self-aware— draws on a tradition of truth-telling and poking fun at the wounds we carry. Born and raised in Long Beach, CA, by a mixed class, mixed race, immigrant activist extended family, Maya has lived and loved in the Bay Area for the second half of her life. Her work has been published in anthologies and journals including: Mujeres de Maíz, Sinister Wisdom, Americas y Latinas: A Stanford Journal of Latin American Studies, Cipactli Journal, and The Lunada Literary Anthology, and is quoted (and misquoted) in essays, presentations and books on U.S.-Central American poetics; Chicana/Latina literature; and identity, gender, and sexuality. Maya is a founding member of the performance group Las Manas, a former artist-in-residence at Galería de La Raza in San Francisco, CA, and La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley, CA, and is a VONA Voices and Dos Brujas workshop alum. She is the co-editor of Desde El Epicentro: An anthology of Central American Poetry and Art and is a lecturer at San Francisco State University.

I was assigned to write a synopsis on a book that covers a wide range of topics for my Women's Studies/Latina Issues course. Most students chose novels, but as a daughter of a Chicano father, and Salvadoran mother, I wanted to choose something that not only spoke to my generation, but also spoke to me as daughter of Central America. Maya Chinchilla does for "American Central Americans" what Gloria Anzaldúa and Cherríe Moraga have done for Chicanas and Boricuas living in the "in-between spaces." A fantastic representation of the complexity, and passions within Latinas living bordered identities. Chinchilla writes inclusively, as a revolutionary, feminista, spiritual, intellectual. This is a refreshing representation of our culture and her poetry is thoughtfully collected and well-organized. I am so happy I found this book.

This book is amazing! The vocabulary is simple yet the statements it makes are so powerful. It really illustrates how one's intersectionalities shape the way we navigate the world. As a Chapina myself, I am also really content that this book brings to the fore front how difficult it is to navigate as Central American as well.

This book is really unique.

The work of Maya Chinichilla in The Cha Cha Files proved to be incredibly thought-provoking, passionate, and entertaining. Her identity as a Central American of Guatemalan and Mayan decent growing up in America, allows her, “to make up what it means to be Guatemalan-hyphen-American” in many of the rooms she finds herself in. I believe the most crucial point to arise out of The Cha Cha Files was the concept of searching for identity within the constructs American society provides. Her poetry gives a vivid and emotional portrayal of what it is like to attempt to situate yourself and come to terms with your identity in a cultural context that demands its actors choose a defined role.Chinchilla, writing as a queer Latina woman, is able to offer a perspective on questions of identity that sets aside a theoretical outlook and embraces the subjective experience. The quote from the opening paragraph comes from one of the most powerful poems of the collection, What it’s Like to Be a Central American Unicorn for Those Who Aren’t, where her experience as a woman who is forced to associate with “an imaginary homeland,” comes to the forefront. It is not that Chinchilla rejects her heritage, but rather the many ways in which one may expect her to connect to a Guatemalan identity (language, indigenous customs, etc.) do not always apply to her life. This feeling of disconnect to her roots is exemplified when she says, “I haven’t been ‘back’ in ten years.” Throughout her work she comes to grips with the fact that she is neither embraced as an American (a “unicorn” in American society), nor does she finds herself able to understand what it means to have grown up in Guatemala and be forced to migrate. She is a product of the diaspora, not an agent within it.The power of Chinchilla’s work comes in the many facets through which she explores her fluid identity: her sexuality, her precarious situation as a Central-American (or is it Central American?), and her family’s denial of their Mayan heritage. I saw her poetry to be one of the most effective mediums for portraying to a reader the experience of a queer Latina women. She displays a refined ability to articulate the boundaries and expectations society has of her because of her outward appearance. In Too Much To Be, she beautifully shows the ways her outward appearance affects her everyday life. She recounts the story of a man she is dancing with questioning her identity as a Guatemalan because of her physical appearance, bringing to light the many generalizations made about Latina women. In reality, as Chinchilla says many times, she is a bridge connecting two worlds; standing in the middle she falls under the gaze of both sides. Chinchilla, through what I would identify as an activist stance, shows an incredible strength and conviction, exposing the societal judgments the two sides of the bridge hold of her. Her work confirms her position at, as she calls it, a “new epicenter,” a middle-ground that begs for further examination by readers.

About the Author
Mario Ferrari received his first Lego box around 1964, when he was 4. Lego was his favorite toy for many years, until he thought he was too old to play with it. In 1998, the Lego Mindstorms RIS set gave him reason to again have Lego become his main addiction. Mario believes Lego is the closest thing to the perfect toy. He is Managing Director at EDIS, a leader in finishing and packaging solutions and promotional packaging. The advent of the MINDSTORMS product line represented for him the perfect opportunity to combine his interest in IT and robotics with his passion for LEGO bricks, which started during his early childhood. Mario has been a very active member of the online MINDSTORMS community from the beginning and has pushed LEGO robotics to its limits. Mario holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Turin and has always nourished a strong interest for physics, mathematics, and computer science. He is fluent in many programming languages and his background includes positions as an IT manager and as a project supervisor. Mario estimates he owns over 60,000 Lego pieces. Mario works in Modena, Italy, where he lives with his wife Anna and his children Sebastiano and Camilla.

Giulio Ferrari is a student in Economics at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, where he also studied Engineering. He is fond of computers and has developed utilities, entertainment software, and Web applications for several companies. Giulio discovered robotics in 1998, with the arrival of MINDSTORMS, and held an important place in the creation of the Italian LEGO community. He shares a love for LEGO bricks with his oldest brother Mario, and a strong curiosity for the physical and mathematical sciences. Giulio also has a collection of 1200 dice, including odd-faced dice and game dice. He studies, works, and lives in Modena, Italy.

Dave Astolfo (GIS A.S.) is a Project Manager / Business Analyst with the technical arm of a North American environmental consulting company. He currently provides project management, technical consulting, database design and software architecture with a focus on Geographic Information Systems ranging from desktop mapping software, web mapping portals and mobile software applications. His specialties range from database modeling, software design / architecture. Dave is a key contributor to the business development and implementation of products and services. As such, he develops enterprise-wide technology solutions and methodologies focused on client organizations. Dave holds a bachelor’s degree from Trent University and is a certified Geographic Information Systems Applications Specialist holding a certificate from Sir Sandford Fleming College. In early 2006, Dave was invited by Lego to participate in the Lego Mindstorms Developer Program (MPD) to help Lego beta test the pre-release of the Lego Mindstorms NXT robotics system. After the release of the NXT, Dave was invited back to participate in the Lego Mindstorms Community Partner Program (MCP) to work with Lego in developing the product further while and providing an ear to the community. Dave has been involved with Lego all of his life, and has been working with the Mindstorms product since the initial release of the Lego Mindstorms Robotics Invention System (RIS) in 1998. Dave is well known for building a Mindstorms domino-placing robot which was published in a previous Syngress book (10 Cool Lego Ultimate Builders Lego Mindstorms Robots). Enjoyed this "how to succeed" tome especially since he acknowledges that much of what happens in life comes down to luck and timing - but the more skills you develop, the more things you try, the more effort you put into life, the luckier you seem to get. Thought his ideas on gleaning what one can from any failure - new ideas, new people, new approaches - certainly improve the odds for success. I was also fascinated by his medical condition as related to the loss of his speaking ability. Interesting battle and a lot of insight in that situation as well. A bit repetitive and simplistic in places but a fun read.

The book was a joy to readHis key ideas are easy to follow because he keeps it simple and Scott Adams writes in a clear and witty mannerFor example the chapter on applying a system vs setting goals and trying to follow them was worth the price of the book many times over for me (and this is reinforced through the book). In his own words goals are a reach-it-and-be-done situation (where you are often waiting to achieve it someday in the future) whereas a system is something you do on a regular or daily basis with a reasonable expectation that doing so will get you to a better place in life. Wanting better health or wanting to lose 10 kg are goals. Being active everyday is a system. One is tied to another - but goals people are fighting the feeling of discouragement at each turn and the systems people are feeling good every-time they apply their system.I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone smart and weary of reading tired cliches in the self-help genre. The book is a breath of fresh air!

I read this book on the recommendation of a friend who is a life coach. She believes in a "systems approach" ranging from daily organization all the way to getting one's life priorities in order. The book was written as a casual life story with odds and ends thrown in. It wasn't one of those with a series of life-changing revelations about success, followed by a list of changes you MUST make, shifting to wondering where to begin, and ending with nagging disappointment at not reaching ANY of those big goals. Not only was it an easy, conversational read, but I was able to NAIL the results according to the point of the book.As Adams says, you shouldn't take life advice from a cartoonist, but I did. I would enjoy reading more of his books as he is an interesting and outside-the-box thinker. Though it's not an earth-shattering-revelation tome, I give it 5 stars for ease and likeliness of success.

This is a solid book with useful advice for everyone.Unfortunately, though, it drops the ball on the central premise of the book: Goals Are Bad vs. Systems Are Good.After finishing this book I was left with a lot of questions about Systems:- What are they exactly?- What are the components of a good system (do's and don'ts)?- How are they different than a project?While I understand that it can be a bit subjective, it would've been helpful if Scott spelled out "For Idiots" some of his systems. He alludes to them in the last bit about staying active, where his system allows "slippage". Again, having more visibility into the specifics of one or more of his systems (real or hypothetical examples) with some detail behind it would have made the book much better.At issue is while I accept the premise that Systems are Better than Goals, I've got no clarity on how to go about setting up systems for myself. That was the big disappointment with the book. Otherwise it's plenty entertaining, and certainly gets to second or third base, but sadly isn't a home run.I plan to copy / paste this into a tweet for @ScottAdamsSays (who is well worth following) in the hopes that he can direct me to some blog posts or respond to my question about.

I had this pre-ordered after reading the WSJ article. It came yesterday around noon and I finished it at 4:00 AM this morning, with few breaks within that time frame. It wasn't the plan for my day, but I don't regret changing my day around to read this book.I would say any book that holds my interest like that deserves a 5-start rating, though there are a few things that I'd tweak to get it closer to perfection. My official score, being a tough grader, is a 4.6/5.0 and I wouldn't resell it for twice what I paid ... especially now that it's fully highlighted and sticky-noted throughout (which makes the book more valuable to me now because I've identified the portions that spoke directly to me and my own experiences).I really enjoyed Scott's independent thinking and challenges of conventional wisdom throughout this book, especially as it contrasts with other self-help, goal-setting or business advice books. For instance, choosing an opportunity for which one has some sort of inherent advantage rather than blindly prescribing "you can do whatever you want" appeals to my pragmatic mind. I have wrestled with this exact conclusion within the past year as I work through my own list of new ideas and opportunities, so I enjoyed that perspective as it resonates with my own thinking.I really enjoyed the thinking on pg. 40, which is fully highlighted, less perhaps a couple sentences. This is where Scott talks about his mental model of not wanting to sell his time due to limited upside and finding a product that is infinitely scalable. I appreciated this candidness, which allows the reader to better understand the later "luck" and apparent rapid success of Dilbert. It's clear to me, Scott's success was a lifetime in the making, the product of continued experimentation and the tenacity to stay at it. This whole book was helpful to me, as my model is exactly the same and the road to success is anything but certain when you're placing bets on what the public wants. Having a system that embraces and anticipates failure, in particular, is an essential tool to avoid letting temporary results bleed over into derailing what could be a highly successful longer-term career choice.Pg. 88, talking about when to quit and how successful ventures often have SOME element of success early-on also resonated with me, and is another page that is more yellow than white after reading this book. These comments also directly resonated with some false-starts I've had, where I correctly pulled the plug after minimal investment of time because things just did not feel right almost from the get-go. I felt poorly about pulling the red handle so early while I was ejecting, but now looking back I know I was practicing the exact type of discipline one needs to practice when trying totally new things. Plan on a good chunk of your initial tests, ideas and hypotheses being off the mark and blindly plowing time and effort at soft-starts is a recipe for disaster. One of my favorite quotes in the book is "Persistence is useful, but there's no point in being an idiot about it." That got a "lol!"I also appreciated Scott's thoughts on useful core skills, especially psychology. This topic has become more and more interesting to me after sluffing through Pscych 202 in college, when it seems like a diversion from more useful topics. I now see how important that is, and also how little I know in this universe of knowledge. The terms page of psychological topics is a lifetime of potential study in itself, so the book leads you to new domains of study if you so choose.Scott urges the reader to not accept anything at face value, and my personal model embraces a good chunk of this body of wisdom with a few of my own twists. Any book that holds your interest and gives you new things to think about is worth owning and reading, in my opinion. This book satisfies that criteria with ease.
